Simply Unpredictable

Work by Banksy.

I’ve given a lot of interviews in the past year about our book Yarn Bombing and the knit graffiti movement and there is one question that every reporter asks me:

“What is the future of yarn bombing?”

Each and every time this question stumps me. All I can say is that the future of yarn bombing is only limited by the imaginations of knitters, and crocheters, and those who work with yarn and that it constantly surprises me, and delights me…and just when I have it figured all out – it confounds me again. For example:

Jessie Hemmons in Philadelphia’s work has been getting a lot of attention: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/home_top_left_story/20100325_Philadelphia_s_anti-graffiti_knit_work.html?page=1&c=y

The Yarn Bombing Facebook group (no affiliation with Mandy or myself, except that I’m a member) has 300 members.

Here’s a nice little pattern for a heart-shaped tag via the Fibre Squad (Albuquerque, NM): http://fibesquad.wordpress.com/2010/02/07/a-heart-for-you/

Knitters in Newcastle, UK get to work: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/north-east-news/todays-evening-chronicle/2010/03/15/guerilla-knittters-drape-work-round-newcastle-72703-26035067/

Those infamous Kitten Mitten Knitters in New Jersey who have been getting tons of attention on the interweb and who have been busy hitting up West Cape May might be asked to purchase a city permit for their tagging exploits. Say whaaaaat? Thank goodness for the city residents who have put up signs in their windows that encourage them to keep on knitting.

And, lastly because it is funny, obscene, and Canadian; the knitification of Vernon, BC: http://knitified.blogspot.com/. Trailer Park Boys intarsia!

So what is the future of yarn bombing? You tell me.

  1. I hope that the future of Yarnbombing is simply more. More togetherness, more color, more expression. Yarnbombing has changed my life by giving me something amazing to be apart of. Thank you everyone who continues to do this creative expression of joy!

I’d never heard of yarn bombing until I found this blog this morning. Thank you, it has made my day…nay… my week. It has certainly brought a smile to my face. Thank you.

  3. Wow – lighten up! We can all use some art around us to make us think. Lots of people are knitting for lots of other people. I practice knit-fiti and knit for others to keep them warm. A group of taggers in Rapid City has bombed a bunch of presidential statues with scarves and hats and notes for the homeless and/or needy to take what they need. You want to help someone? Do it! But your criticism of someone bringing attention to the realm of knitting and art seems like energy wasted. I think it wakes up folks who may be so tied down to their tv’s and computers and texting that they can’t appreciate something different. A soft, warm covering over something hard and cold. If it were a different art form (i.e., something that can’t also be “practical”) would you be so critical?

I have had that question and it stumps me too. I figure like anything creative it will evolve, into what who knows. On a personal level all I can say with surety is that I will continue to create, but what, how and where remains a magical mystery.
I thought the comment on the philly story that people should knit for the troops earns the darwin award for stupidity.

Yay to the Geordie Knitters, wish I had been there. Howway the Lads!

  8. We’ve been up to this kinda stuff for 3 years now, and the whole thing has only gotten bigger, but Don’t call it a fad. I mean, I don’t plan on quitting. Who’s with me?

Maybe people will branch out a bit more, I can’t see the Yarn Bombing Links right now, but i think we’re under craftivists. That column is too short, if you guys ever get knitters block try out some sewing!
