Mixing it up

Yarnbombing-by-the-Jafagirls

Who is this mysterious face? The JafaGirls of Yellow Springs, Ohio keep it fresh by mixing up a bit of fabric paint, stenciling, and yarn. Check out JafaBrit’s blog for some cool art.

This past weekend, Mandy and I spoke on Word on the Street, a one day literary festival at the Vancouver Public Library. We were at Word Under the Street – the comix and zine area. It was a lot of fun. Nardwaur (one of the coolest Canadian celebrities) was the MC. We showed off projects from the book and covered a bike in wool as an homage to the many artists who have created wooly bikes.

Nardwaur quizzes me about the Halifax Explosion, and I momentarily blank out…my only response is a feeble ‘…of yarn?’

I’ll have to post a picture of the completed bike (and a round-up of other artists who have covered bikes and motorbikes) soon. All in all, Word on the Street was a fun, fun day and it was amazing to see so many people knitting and crocheting in the audience.

Discussion was generated about Yarnbombin™ on CBC’s Q show this morning.

Woot!! Woot!! They were all sufficiently puzzled about the phenomenon as well. : D

  8. jafabrit says:

thanks Knitgirl, I left a comment too (hopefully they will publish it).

  9. Leanne says:

Thanks for the comments on the Q site – funny that they were puzzled, we’ve been on CBC’s Early Edition twice and they’ve totally got it.

JafaBrit – I LOVE the cartoon. So great.

And KnitGirl – the TM definitely belongs to you.

I belong to a stitch and bitch group here in Auckland New Zealand and while I was away recently in Europe on holiday my five friends came round to my house and spent 5 hours up ladders and stitching and bitching and completely covered my garden trees in knitting graffitti- would love to send you some pictures- what email address shall I send them too- it is attracting quite a lot of attention- passersby stopping and coming in to see…amazing.

Just found out who Nardwaur is from The Best Show on WFMU (http://3.ly/9OX). I feel like I’ve penetrated some subcultural sub-basement!

Congrats on all the success ladies, and I’m totally psyched to see the yarn collage in the second photo :)

Anyone thinking of yarnbombing some of the Olympic stuff around town? I’m thinking a scarf would look very nice around the neck of the English Bay Inukshuk?

    Anyone interested?

I recently purchased a very cool CBR but had a small misfortune! I tried to brake consistently with the front brakes but the wheel almost instantly slipped out under me! I have been on the back of a bike with a dood a few times who has even brought the rear wheel up into the air by braking very hard with the forward brake! How did he do it different? Im confused!!
