Talking about yarn bombing

Enough about us. Rebecca sent us this wonderful wrapped post from Fremantle, Australia.

Rebecca reports: Hulbert Street in Fremantle, Western Australia about two weeks ago. Yarnbombing has been going off here in Perth, I’ve been seeing more and more! A local yarnbomber (Captain Plaknit) has also been asked by the local council to yarnbomb and entire street for a festival at the end of this year – I’ll bet he’s busy.

Thanks to Rebecca for taking the time to send this – and kudos to Captain Plaknit – his ‘yarn blooms‘ are impressive! I’d love to see more yarn bombers experiment with wooly typography like the Captain.

Water and Lace

In the tradition of Janet Morton’s Linden in Lace Tree, artist Penelope Durston, of Fitzroy, Australia creates these beautiful installation pieces using doilies:

She says “I did a bit of ‘doily-ing’ whilst I was down in Tasmania  last August. Tasmania has incredibly very beautiful wilderness areas and (I) went down with the plan of taking a few photos in the bush but when it came down to it the moss and lichen and all were just so beautiful I had trouble doing much doilism- it seemed wrong somehow. This one I liked though… I took a rock from a beach in Devonport (north coast of Tassie), collected some doilies from an op-shop in Smithton (north-west coner of tas), stitched on in my room at Cradle Mountain (north central- world heritage wilderness area) and photographed it on a wild road just out of Cradle Mountain with rivulets of ice cold snow melt pouring over stones.”

Happy Holidays!

Mandy and Leanne will be taking some time away from blogging to enjoy the holidays, knit up a storm, and rest up with family. We’ll be back with yarn bombing goodness the first week of January 2010.

Hurray for wooly parking meters!

Installed at the corner of Main and Hastings, Jana used her own handspun, hand dyed Merino wool.

She says: I was a little nervous at first and then surprised when the city worker just got out, swept around me and proceeded to explain that he often gets asked what the strangest thing he’s ever seen on the job is. Apparently this is it.

Too funny. For those who do not know Vancouver, Main and Hastings is a pretty lively intersection – so it delights me to think that yarn graffiti seems unusual. Janna works in social work in the neighbourhood, so its nice to think that her handmade piece is bringing a bit of cheer to those in the area. I particularly like the ruffle around the top!
